A ground services worker at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport has died after being struck by an aircraft on the airport apron Monday evening.

Emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24. The worker, an employee of ground services provider Samsic, was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Preliminary information from Montreal police indicated the aircraft may have been moving backward when it struck the worker, although authorities have not confirmed the circumstances leading to the collision.

Photos taken following the incident showed a French bee aircraft surrounded by emergency vehicles on the tarmac.

Aéroports de Montréal (ADM), which operates Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, confirmed the worker's death Tuesday morning.

“The loss of a member of our airport community affects us all deeply,” ADM President and CEO Yves Beauchamp said in a statement. “During this difficult time, our thoughts are with the employee’s family, loved ones and colleagues, to whom we extend our heartfelt sympathy and sincere condolences.”

ADM said support measures have been put in place for employees and passengers who witnessed the incident.

Montreal police said the incident is not being investigated as a criminal matter. The investigation has been transferred to Employment and Social Development Canada, which is responsible for investigating workplace incidents involving federally regulated employers.

ADM said it is cooperating with the investigation and would not provide additional comments while the investigation is underway.

Airport operations continued following the incident.
