Mar. 10—Travelers between the Sarasota- Bradenton area and Detroit will be able to fly directly between the two areas all summer.

Delta Air Lines has extended its service between Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, the local airport said Tuesday. Flights between Sarasota- Bradenton and Detroit via Delta will run once per day until Sept. 6.

"We are excited to see Delta Air Lines extending the nonstop service to Detroit through the summer," Rick Piccolo, president and CEO of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, said. "This daily flight will provide travelers access to another major hub city in the Delta network."

This is the second flight at the Sarasota-Bradenton airport that has been extended to run through the summer months within the past week. Last week, the airport said that United Airlines will keep its flight between Sarasota- Bradenton and Denver, Colorado, running until early September.

"This is especially good news because there is going to be good pent-up demand coming from that region after a tough winter and a year of restrictions," Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota County, said of the Detroit service extension.

Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, echoed Haley's sentiment.

"People have been delayed going on vacation, and like us, Delta feels like there's going to be an influx of vacationers coming to Florida and areas like the Bradenton area throughout the summer from places like the Midwest," he said. "I believe they'll see good capacity on their aircraft."

The airport has also added several new flights and even a new carrier — Southwest Airlines — in recent months. Southwest launched at Sarasota- Bradenton on Valentine's Day with four routes, and the airline plans to start serving three additional seasonal routes later this month. The airline also will begin daily flights to Atlanta, Georgia, on March 11.

Allegiant Air also has announced new seasonal service to Peoria, Illinois, and Concord, North Carolina, starting in May.
