Finnair to Cut Up to 1,000 Jobs Due to Pandemic

Finnair is to cut up to 1,000 jobs due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions, the Finnish airline announced.

Helsinki (dpa) - Finnair is to cut up to 1,000 jobs due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions, the Finnish airline announced on Tuesday.

Overall, 2,800 employees in Finland are affected by job cuts or temporary layoffs, the company said in a statement.

"Our revenue has decreased considerably, and that is why we simply must adjust our costs to our new size," said Topi Manner, Finnair's chief executive.

The airline employs 6,700 people in total, of which 6,200 are in Finland.

Almost all of those working in Finland were temporarily laid off for a part of spring and summer, a policy which the airline said it would continue either for a fixed term or indefinitely to secure the future of the company.

Manner said the company upped its savings target from 80 to 100 million euros (118 million dollars).

The Finnish government, which owns 55.8 per cent of Finnair, had secured the airline 600 million euros in state guarantees.
