Airlines to Add Flight, Seats for Erie Passengers

Aug. 20, 2020

Erie International Airport shared some good news on National Aviation Day on Wednesday.

United Airlines will offer another daily non-stop flight between Erie and Chicago beginning Sept. 2.

The airline currently operates one daily flight between Erie International Airport and Chicago O'Hare.

Also in September, American Airlines will offer more seats on its flights between Erie and Charlotte, North Carolina.

The airline will introduce regional jets with 76 seats, including first-class seating, on Sept. 9. American currently provides service on 50-seat jets.

"The bigger planes will provide 52 additional seats a day for Erie travelers," airport Executive Director Derek Martin said.

The new flight and increased seating are the first major upticks in local air service since the coronavirus pandemic began and passenger numbers nationwide dropped precipitately.

"It's very positive news for Erie," Martin said.

United Airlines on May 1 cut back service to just three weekly flights between Erie and Chicago and later reintroduced a single daily flight.

American Airlines reduced the number of Erie-Charlotte flights and at least temporarily ended its Erie-Chicago service.

Delta Air Lines grounded Erie-Detroit service, at least for a time, this spring.
