More Than $23 Million in Grants Issued for Improvements at Detroit Metro and Willow Run Airports
Apr. 27—U.S. Sens. Gary Petersand Debbie Stabenow recently announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will be awarding the Wayne County Airport Authority two grants through the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Airport Improvement Program.
The Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport (DTW) will receive $10,378,199 to reconstruct a taxiway, and the Willow Run Airport will receive $12,780,187 for construction of a new taxiway.
"Detroit Metro Airport is a major transportation hub and economic engine for Michigan, and the Willow Run Airport plays a critical role as a center for transporting cargo," Peters said. "I'm proud to support the federal program that provided this funding for taxiway updates that will help increase capacity and safe travel at these airports."
Stabenow was also happy to make the announcement.
"Having reliable and safe air service is crucial for economic development, commerce, and tourism," Stabenow said. "This funding is another critical infrastructure investment coming to our state and will improve Detroit Metro Wayne County and Willow Run Airports for years to come."
Officials from the airport authority said the money will help with some new construction.
"The Wayne County Airport Authority is pleased to receive $23 million in Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grants to help fund the construction of a new parallel taxiway at Willow Run Airport and reconstruct a taxiway at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)," said Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority. "WCAA thanks U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, and the Michigan congressional delegation for their tireless advocacy of Willow Run Airport and DTW. We also appreciate the FAA's continued support and understanding of our infrastructure needs."
