Kalamazoo Airport to Halt Commercial Flights During Runway Completion Work
KALAMAZOO, MI — No commercial flights will arrive at or depart from the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) from Saturday, Sept. 12 through Friday, Sept. 18.
Airport officials at AZO issued a reminder Tuesday, Sept. 2 that commercial air service will be temporarily suspended beginning at midnight, going into Saturday, Sept. 12.
Regularly scheduled commercial flights are anticipated to resume on Saturday, Sept. 19.
The temporary suspension will allow contractors to safely complete critical pavement, lighting and airfield work associated with the 450-foot extension of Runway 17-35, officials said.
The project, which is being completed to boost safety and business reach, began in April and is being funded as part of a $14 million Federal Aviation grant received by the airport last fall.
The runway extension will provide pilots with additional operational distance, improving safety margins and strengthening AZO’s long-term ability to serve Southwest Michigan, officials said.
While no commercial flights will be going out from Sept. 12-18, the airport will remain open for rental car access and other customer needs. Runways 5-23 and 9-27 will also remain available for eligible airport operations.
Passengers with travel scheduled during the closure are asked to contact their respective airline directly regarding their itinerary.
