AOPA's Air Safety Institute Releases New Accident Case Study

April 30, 2021

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute (ASI) released a new episode in its popular Accident Case Study video series.

Accident Case Study: Faulty Assumptions, recreates the events that led a Beechcraft Baron 58 to crash short of its destination during an instrument approach in IMC.

“This case study exposes the consequences of planning a flight with little room for contingencies. A combination of flawed assumptions, improper risk assessment, and relying on equipment beyond the designs of its accuracy ultimately proved catastrophic," said ASI Senior Vice President Richard McSpadden.

Accident Case Studies use FAA ATC radio communication transcripts, NTSB documentation, and video animation to recreate the dynamics and track the accident chain of events. The videos share critical lessons to help pilots recognize and avoid similar mistakes.
