A United Airlines flight from Newark to Denver International Airport experienced mechanical problems Sunday night and skidded during a rough landing that produced sparks, according to passenger accounts.

“The massive cloud of sparks we saw was from grinding into the runway. No fire, thankfully,” tweeted Scott S. Lowe of Denver.

Rachel Rivas, a spokeswoman for the airline, said the United flight 2429 “experienced a mechanical issue upon landing” and that there were no injuries.

“All customers were bussed to the terminal where our customer service teams assisted them. The aircraft has been taken out of service and is being inspected by our maintenance teams,” Rivas said.

According to United records, the flight left Newark Airport about 5:05 p.m. eastern time Sunday and landed just after 7 p.m. mountain standard time. After the flight, Lowe and other passengers tweeted the plane’s landing gear had malfunctioned.

United officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
