Philippines Airlines Jet Makes Emergency Landing in LA After Engine Catches Fire

LOS ANGELES, California — A Philippines Airline flight with nearly 350 passengers on board made an emergency landing Thursday at Los Angeles International Airport after flames began shooting from an engine during flight.

A spokesman for the airport tells CBS Los Angeles that Flight 113 was destined for Manila when it took off just after 11 a.m. But a mechanical issue developed in one of the engines shortly after takeoff, resulting in bursts of flames.

It resulted in some nervous moments for the 342 passengers and 18 crew members on board. CBS Los Angeles reports some passengers began screaming and crying when they saw the flames from the engine.

“I could see flashes of light. I though it was some kind of... just from the sunlight, and then I just start hearing ‘boom , boom, boom.’ and I look out of the window and there’s balls of fires just shooting out of the engine," passenger Walter Baumann tells KABC Channel 7.

No flames were seen from the engine when the plane landed and there were no injuries. CBS Los Angeles reports passengers were being transferred to other flights.
