'Sudden Turbulence' Leaves Multiple People Injured Aboard Air Canada Flight, Forces Emergency Landing in Hawaii

About 35 people were hurt when an Air Canada flight that was en route to Australia was struck by unexpected turbulence over the Pacific Ocean on Thursday morning and was forced to make an emergency landing in Hawaii.

The Boeing 777-200, which was flying from Vancouver to Sydney, “encountered un-forecasted and sudden turbulence” about two hours past Hawaii, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in an email.

The aircraft turned around and landed without incident at Honolulu’s international airport just before 1 p.m. The plane was carrying 269 passengers and 15 crew members.

Mah said the injuries appeared to be minor, but she did not offer more details.

The airline was making arrangements Thursday for hotel accommodations for passengers.
