Durango-La Plata County Airport Closes Seasonal Service to LAX with Contest

Aug. 3, 2016

American Airlines’ seasonal nonstop service from Durango-La Plata County Airport to Los Angeles International Airport is scheduled to end on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The weekend-only service launched on June 4 as a means of providing additional options for vacation and business travel. Now that the summer months are coming to an end and the route is drawing to a close, the airport plans to mark the occasion by offering one last weekend getaway trip to Los Angeles with a “Pack Your Bags” contest.

To enter, participants simply have to show up at the airport at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 20, with their bags packed for the weekend and dressed for Hollywood glamour. A random drawing will be held for the chance to literally walk the red carpet right up to the American Airlines ticket counter for their free ticket. The winner and one guest will be booked on the afternoon flight to Los Angeles and provided with a two-night hotel stay in the city.

Tony Vicari, interim director of aviation for Durango-La Plata County Airport, says that the promotion is a fun way to bring the summer service to an end and to reintroduce the community to the airport and the other air service options it provides.

“The weekend route to Los Angeles has been a nice addition to our existing air service options,” says Vicari. “But since it was scheduled to be seasonal and we knew it was going to end, we didn’t want it to go away without acknowledgement. We wanted to give it a lively send off and do it in a way that could really engage the community.”

Although the nonstop route to Los Angeles may be coming to a close, Vicari notes that passengers will still have numerous options to connect to Los Angeles or any other chosen destination. American Airlines will continue to provide daily nonstop service to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport throughout the year. United Airlines also offers daily nonstop service to Denver International Airport.

“It’s always difficult to see a route come to an end, even when that end was planned and on the schedule, but the consistent, year-round service that we receive from both American Airlines and United Airlines really is the core of what makes our airport such a great travel resource for our region. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Denver International Airport, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are three of the busiest airports in the country. Between these three options, our passengers can fly to a tremendous number of destinations with just one simple connection.”
