Feb. 1—MANATEE COUNTY — Allegiant plans to start nonstop service between Sarasota Bradenton International Airport and Austin, Texas, on April 14, with introductory fares as low as $49.
Seats and dates are limited and fares are not available on all flights. Flights must be purchased by Feb. 2 for travel by Nov. 13.
Allegiant began serving SRQ in 2018, offering three direct destinations, and quickly ramped up service over the next few years to 28, and now there are 53 nonstop destinations.
In March, Allegiant will begin new nonstop service to Akron- Canton, Ohio, and Appleton, Wisconsin.
"I am real pleased. We continue to move forward in a positive manner," Rick Piccolo, president and CEO of SRQ, said Tuesday of the new service.
In December, 347,268 passengers traveled through the terminal of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, compared to 119,114 passengers in December 2020, an increase of 191.5%. It was the most passengers ever in the airport's history.
For the year, 3,163,543 passengers traveled through the terminal at SRQ, a 155.7% increase over 2020. The previous record was 2,010,304 passengers, set in 1990.
For 2022, the growth trend is expected to continue. For the first four months of 2022 there are approximately two million airline seats available for purchase which is a 42% increase over 2021.
Avelo, the newest airline serving SRQ, started nonstop service to New Haven, Connecticut, in January.
To keep up with the growth, the airport has expanded the screening checkpoint area; added three new 100,000-gallon jet fuel storage tanks; expanded the long-term parking lot; and added remote parking lots.
In 2022, plans include breaking ground on a new ground transportation facility; improved and expanded concessions; and a new ground level terminal which will provide at least five additional gates for aircraft arrivals and departures.
