Boston Logan International Airport has launched a pilot program featuring Amelia, a life-size AI hologram designed to help passengers navigate the airport and access travel information through natural conversation.

Developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), Proto Hologram and Holomedia AI, the concierge provides directions to gates, restaurants, shops, lounges and baggage claim. The installation makes Boston Logan the largest airport to introduce the technology for passenger assistance, according to the companies.

Amelia combines a life-size digital avatar with a touch screen, live mapping and real-time airport information. Travelers can ask questions and receive step-by-step directions, while integrated TSA wait-time information can help them plan their time in the terminal.

The system can communicate in up to 40 languages, with English, Spanish and French included in the Boston Logan pilot. It also offers a connection to live customer service staff when additional assistance is needed.

Accessibility features include high-contrast displays, closed captioning, WCAG-compliant mapping and wheelchair-accessible positioning. The self-contained unit does not require passengers to use their own devices.

Massport is testing the technology as an addition to its existing customer service options. The companies say Amelia can provide assistance around the clock, support staff during peak travel periods and allow employees to focus on more complex passenger needs.

The Boston Logan installation marks Proto’s first major deployment in the Boston area. The company’s hologram and spatial computing technology is also used in healthcare, education, finance, retail, sports and entertainment.
