Washington Manassas Airport has received a Part 139 Airport Operating Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration, clearing the way for the Virginia airport to accommodate certain commercial passenger airline operations.

The certification marks a significant step in the airport’s effort to introduce commercial passenger service and makes Washington Manassas the first airport in Virginia to receive a new airport operating certificate in 53 years.

Part 139 certification requires airports to demonstrate compliance with federal safety standards covering areas including runway and taxiway pavement conditions, aircraft rescue and firefighting, emergency planning, wildlife hazard management and personnel training.

“Commercial flights coming into Manassas will provide more economic growth within the community and create another commercial airport to service the Washington D.C. area,” said FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Dan Edwards.

The FAA has invested more than $46 million at Washington Manassas Airport during the past five years to support infrastructure improvements. Projects include runway rehabilitation and plans for construction of a new air traffic control tower.

The certification follows another recent regulatory milestone for the airport. In July, the FAA completed its environmental review of Washington Manassas Airport’s Part 139 certification and terminal redevelopment program, issuing a Finding of No Significant Impact and Record of Decision.

Located approximately 30 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., Washington Manassas Airport has historically served primarily general aviation operations. The airport’s move toward commercial passenger service would add another option to a region currently served by Washington Dulles International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
