FAA Eyes New Control Tower in Baltimore

The FAA recently began preliminary planning for a new air traffic control tower at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to replace the one that opened in 30 years ago.

The FAA recently began preliminary planning for a new air traffic control tower at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to replace the one that opened in 30 years ago. The new $26 million tower would  provide a more panoramic platform for viewing airport activity and ensure room for a new generation of electronic monitoring equipment.

The FAA looked into both renovating and replacing the tower, and assessed the structure's condition, age, location on the airfield, height and size when making its decision. It also considered future air traffic volume, staffing and technology/equipment projections.

The FAA now is looking at potential tower sites, which is expected to take another six months.
