1 Dead After Plane Crashes Near Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta
One person is dead after a small plane with two people aboard crashed Monday afternoon near the Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta, officials said.
Authorities were notified of the crash in “a remote area” near the greenway north of Kimball Bridge Road just before 1 p.m., Alpharetta police spokesman Sgt. David Freeman said.
Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB) confirmed that one person died and that the plane was preparing to land at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. It was on an instrument approach to the airport when it crashed under unknown circumstances, according to the NTSB.
On social media, the NTSB said the plane was a Beechcraft BE58, a twin-engine aircraft that can hold four or six people, including the pilot. It’s a newer model of the Beechcraft B55 that crashed into Lake Hartwell last month, killing its pilot.
Freeman said there was no danger to the public, but the Big Creek Greenway was closed while first responders worked at the crash site.
The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating, Freeman said. Investigators with the NTSB should arrive at the scene Tuesday morning, the federal agency said.
