Pilot Killed in Experimental Airplane Crash Near Oak Hill

A man whose experimental plane was seen falling out of the sky Wednesday afternoon was later found dead at the site where the plane crashed, Volusia County sheriff's investigators said.

Further investigation into the plane crash will be done by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board, according to Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant.

An investigation by the Sheriff's Office indicates the experimental airplane crashed into some woods two miles northeast of 1340 Maytown Road.

The plane crash was reported to authorities shortly before noon on Wednesday, but the wreckage and the pilot were located after 7 p.m., Gant said.

A caller initially reported a possible plane crash shortly before noon in an area north of Blue Ridge Flight Park Airport, but responding deputies couldn't find a downed plane. A canvass of the area indicated all of the aircraft stationed there were on the ground and in their hangars at the time, Gant said.

Then, around 4:17 p.m., the Sheriff's Office was notified of an emergency beacon activation from an aircraft earlier in the morning. Deputies conducted a well-being check on the plane's registered owner and got no answer when they knocked on his door. Later, they found his hangar at the flight park empty, Gant said.

Deputies, a sheriff's helicopter, Edgewater police and members of the Civil Air Patrol searched extensively for the plane until they found the wreckage at 7:11 p.m. in a heavily wooded area.

The identity of the pilot is known, but the Sheriff's Office is not releasing the name pending confirmation and official notification of next of kin, Gant said.
