Plane Still Sits in Susquehanna River After Emergency Landing

The waters of the Susquehanna River seem to be a little bit deeper and flowing a little bit faster than they were last week at this time.

That’s about all that has changed. It’s still calm and quiet in the neighborhood along the river in Londonderry Township. Small fishing boats bob up and down along the banks on a crisp, autumn day.

And an airplane still sits in the middle of the river.

The small, single engine plane made an emergency landing in the river between Three Mile Island and the Harrisburg International Airport Oct. 4.

What caused the plane to lose power is still under investigation.

A pilot and passenger were on board, and one of them received minor injuries.

After more than a week, the white and red plane still sits in the river, water flowing around it about halfway up the hull, white tail rising up like a metallic dorsal fin.

Harrisburg International Airport officials previously said it is the plane owner’s responsibility to remove it, and the owner’s insurance company was working with a salvage company to do just that.

Just how the Piper PA-46 will be pulled from the river – whether it’s by barge or helicopter or some other method – remains to be seen.

What we know so far is plane had left the Greater Rochester International Airport on the afternoon of Oct. 4 and was cleared to land at runway 31 at Harrisburg International Airport when it lost power.

It is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The plane’s owner, Barjack Aviation, could not be reached for comment.
