Swissport Expands E-Commerce Capacity at Liège Airport With New Import Hub
Swissport has expanded its European e-commerce network with the opening of a new 5,500 m² second-line warehouse at Liège Airport (LGG). Dedicated to import parcel handling, the facility increases the company’s total e-commerce footprint at the airport to 9,000 m² and strengthens its position in one of Europe’s fastest-growing cargo hubs.
Purpose-built for high-volume, fast-turnaround operations, the hub offers a throughput capacity of up to 300 tons per day. It supports fully integrated import handling, including cargo collection, shuttling, breakdown, scanning and sorting, and final loading for last-mile delivery.
Dirk Goovaerts, CEO Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India & Global Cargo Chair at Swissport, said the investment enhances the company’s ability to deliver fast, data-driven, and sustainable logistics solutions for airline and integrator customers.
Operations at Liège integrate customers’ Warehouse Management Systems with Swissport’s CargoSpot platform for real-time visibility and data integrity. The bonded site is optimized for cross-dock efficiency, designed to manage complex, piece-intensive flows through fully digital workflows and a skilled local team.
Swissport Belgium Managing Director Wilfried Jans noted that the expanded footprint ensures the company can accommodate higher parcel volumes while maintaining reliability and precision. Frédéric Brun, Head of Commercial Cargo & Logistics at Liège Airport, said the development underscores LGG’s role as a leading European hub for e-commerce and express logistics.
Aligned with Swissport’s global sustainability standards, the facility operates paperless processes and maintains comprehensive recycling programs for cardboard, wood, and plastics.
The expansion supports Swissport’s global strategy to develop scalable e-commerce capacity across major trade gateways. It joins specialized hubs in Brussels, Milan, Basel, New York JFK, and Shanghai, reinforcing Swissport’s role as a reliable partner for airlines and freight forwarders across key markets.
