Ground Crew Member Ingested into Plane Engine at Texas Airport
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A crew member working on the airport tarmac for Delta Airlines was killed Friday night when he was “ingested” into the engine of a plane that was arriving late Friday night, reports say.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement that the worker, who was employed by a company contracted by Delta for grounds operations, was killed at about 10:25 p.m. Friday as Delta Flight 1111 was taxiing to the gate at San Antonio International Airport, KENS Channel 5 reports. The plane had one engine operating as it approached the gate, according to News 4 San Antonio.
“We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member’s life in San Antonio,” the company that employs the worker said in a statement to KENS. “Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The identity of the worker has not been released. The flight had arrived from Los Angeles.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation,” the airport said in a statement to News 4.
