Opportunities Presented by Cargo Growth
Josh Headshot 60d9f46b3b4c7Throughout a challenging year, cargo has provided a bright spot in the aviation industry. And cargo demands remain high, offering opportunities for ground handlers, airlines and airports, alike.
Earlier this month, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) announced plans to expand its air cargo facility footprint. The airport’s cargo expansion strategy is being rolled out in conjunction with a facility redevelopment partnership with Aviation Facilities Company (AFCO) and PHL’s new membership with The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA).
During the event PHL chief revenue officer Jim Tyrrell elaborated on cargo best practices identified by the airport.
These methods included:
- Implementing technology and automation
- Developing the air cargo market by supporting key industries
- Developing state-of-the-art facilities to support key commodities
- Working to attract high level airline services
- Working to attract and promote quality airport services
These best practices were recognized and implemented to help the airport capitalize on the $53 billion of air cargo volume in the catchment area around Philadelphia and support the 11 carriers with cargo capabilities currently operating at PHL.
PHL identified these best practices to set the airport up for success. However, having insight into how an airport approaches cargo development can give ground service providers a leg up when it comes to securing cargo handling contracts as well.
Winning contract bids has always been a competitive process. Understanding market trends and new technology can lead to successful bids. Ground service providers that can approach this process with the airport’s perspective in mind, in addition to the needs of carriers, can position themselves for success by shaping bids in an attractive manner.
A unified approach from all stakeholders allows everyone to succeed.
