British Airways Boss Steps Down in Airline Industry's 'Worst Crisis'

Alex Cruz, who has headed British Airways since 2016, is stepping down with immediate effect. His successor will be Sean Doyle, who previously managed Irish carrier Aer Lingus.

London (dpa) - The Spaniard Alex Cruz, who has headed British Airways since 2016, is stepping down with immediate effect, according to a statement from the parent International Airlines Group (IAG) on Monday.

His successor will be Sean Doyle, who previously managed Irish carrier Aer Lingus, which is also part of IAG, the group said.

"We're navigating the worst crisis faced in our industry and I'm confident these internal promotions will ensure IAG is well placed to emerge in a strong position," IAG chief executive, Luis Gallego, said in the statement.

Cruz, 54, remains as non-executive chairman at British Airways.

Air traffic, which at times collapsed almost completely as a result of the pandemic, is only recovering slowly and sluggishly.

IAG posted a loss of 2.1 billion euros (2.5 billion dollars) in the second quarter after a profit of 736 million euros a year earlier, the group announced at the end of July.

IAG also includes the airlines Iberia, Vueling and Level.
