2023 Airport Business Top 40 Under 40: Gregory Mayer

Dec. 19, 2023
Senior Airport Planner, AECOM

The Tyndall Air Force Base (AFB) Hurricane Recovery Master Plan led to a number of “firsts” for Gregory Mayer. Hit by Hurricane Michael in 2018, the AFB flightline and facilities suffered severe damage.

In addition to the Master Plan being Mayer’s first major project since being hired at AECOM, it was his first time working on an airfield exclusively with military aircraft, facilities, and safety standards, as well as the first time he was required to use Department of Defense (DOD) Unified Facilities Criteria airfield standards.

“The most challenging part of the Master Plan effort was the timeliness and pace of the expected deliverables,” he said. “It is no surprise that military personnel expect things to be done as quick and efficient as possible.”

Mayer assisted in bringing the base back to its pre-storm day-to-day operations and developed alternatives to incorporate strategies to support Tyndall’s vision as a 21st Century installation.

As a result, the project team received a Citation Award for Outstanding Federal Project Planning from the American Planning Association.

A member of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), Mayer is involved with the AAAE Northeast Chapter’s (NEC) Young Professional’s group and the AAAE NEC’s Corporate Committee. He also is a member of AECOM's Great Place To Work and Pride Employee Resource Group organizations.

He mentors junior planners and interns and has continued to expand his knowledge of the industry, working on multiple Master Plans, Airport Layout Plans, heliport studies, and the Federal Aviation Administration’s annual Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) program update.

Currently a Planner III, he is working towards AAAE Certified Member accreditation and pursuing project management.
