O.W.L. Upgrades GroundAware Radar for Airport Perimeter Security
Observation Without Limits (O.W.L.) has introduced an upgraded version of its GroundAware GA1360LH radar system, designed to provide automated detection and tracking of potential intrusions across large critical infrastructure sites, including airports.
The GA1360LH is a 2D, 360-degree digital multi-beamforming radar system capable of distinguishing among people, animals and ground and water vehicles. According to the company, the system can detect ground and water vehicles at ranges exceeding 1 kilometer and people at distances up to 600 meters.
A single radar can provide coverage across as much as 750 acres, allowing airports and other large facilities to monitor open perimeters and areas of concern with fewer sensors and supporting infrastructure.
“Our original GA1360 radar was designed to function as the wide-area perimeter intrusion detection sensor that helped meet NERC CIP-014 requirements for transmission substations,” said Adam Robinett, O.W.L. CEO. “The GA1360 quickly became our workhorse ground surveillance radar that serves as the foundation for event-based layered security at all kinds of critical infrastructure sites.”
The upgraded GA1360LH provides longer detection ranges and improved target tracking, according to Robinett, supporting automated detection, tracking, deterrence and response within approximately a 1-kilometer radius.
The system uses pulsed Doppler processing and operates in the S-band frequency range. Its digital beamforming technology is designed to provide all-weather detection and tracking, while the solid-state system contains no moving parts.
The GA1360LH can also integrate with ONVIF cameras, video management systems, access control systems, physical security information management systems, audible alarms, security lighting and drones. Users can establish customizable alarm zones and configure automatic response triggers when targets enter designated areas.
In addition to airports, O.W.L. identifies seaports, rail facilities, power plants, data centers, water treatment facilities, mines and other critical infrastructure sites as potential applications for the system.
