MWAA Names Claire McKenna General Counsel

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has appointed Claire McKenna as senior vice president and general counsel, effective May 1.

McKenna, currently deputy general counsel, will succeed Ashley Carvalho, who is stepping down for personal reasons. Her appointment was approved by the Airports Authority’s board of directors in March.

She joined the Airports Authority in 2020 after serving nine years as a senior attorney in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the General Counsel. Her background also includes roles with the Michigan Economic Development Corp., the Michigan Economic Recovery Office and private legal practice, along with experience in federal and state government.

During her tenure, McKenna has played a key role in navigating complex legal and regulatory issues as the Airports Authority manages growth and evolving industry dynamics.

She holds a law degree from Notre Dame Law School and a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Michigan State University.

Her promotion ensures continuity in legal leadership as the Airports Authority continues to oversee operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport while advancing major infrastructure and transportation initiatives.
