Alex Smith represents the quintessential airport success story—rising from a part-time position in the Operations Department to a leadership role in Business and Economic Development at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. His career reflects adaptability, vision, and a commitment to ensuring airports serve both passengers and the communities around them.
Smith has played a central role in Gateway’s $28 million Terminal Modernization Project, one of the largest developments in the airport’s history. He also grew the airport’s Revenue Parking Program, which posted record-setting revenue in fiscal year 2025, and contributed to the growth of high-profile partnerships with Gulfstream and Virgin Galactic. By blending his operational expertise with his business acumen, he has brought a unique perspective to some of the airport’s most important initiatives.
Smith’s commitment to the industry extends beyond his airport. He earned his Accredited Airport Executive certification in 2018 and has been deeply involved with the Southwest Chapter of AAAE, where he now serves as 2nd Vice President. He has also chaired the Young Professionals Committee, mentoring colleagues and sponsoring student capstone projects at Arizona State University. His guidance has helped numerous colleagues earn promotions and take on new responsibilities.
Reflecting on his leadership style, Smith said, “Don’t talk about it, be about it. Have a servant-leader mindset, be willing to help others, and don’t ask things of people you aren’t willing to do yourself.” It’s a philosophy that underscores his career and his impact on the industry’s next generation.
