Matthew Rodriguez has built his aviation career on service, resilience, and a passion for transforming teams. After nine years in the U.S. Navy, where he developed leadership, discipline, and operational expertise, he joined Bellingham International Airport in 2018 as an ARFF/Ops Specialist. Within seven years, he rose to Director of Aviation, reflecting his ability to lead from the ground up and create lasting organizational change.

Rodriguez’s leadership is visible in the improvements he has brought to BLI’s safety and operations. He oversaw the airport’s AFFF-to-3F transition, revamped ARFF/Ops training to meet FAA Part 139 standards, managed airfield paint and obstacle-free area improvements, and formed a triennial exercise committee that significantly strengthened the Airport Emergency Plan. He also guided the redesign of restrooms and gate areas, enhanced parking infrastructure, and initiated new non-aeronautical revenue programs to position the airport for sustainable growth. One of his proudest accomplishments has been reversing years of turnover in the ARFF/Ops division. Under his leadership, the team achieved 100 percent employee retention for two consecutive years—a first in the airport’s history.

Rodriguez credits his leadership approach to lessons learned in the military and the influence of respected mentors. “Watching our team’s hard work translate into tangible results—whether it’s improved safety, stronger customer service, or new growth opportunities—is the true beauty of what we do,” he said. His goal is to leave a legacy of consistent leadership, innovation, and community impact, making BLI a model of operational excellence and regional connectivity.
