Lehigh Valley Airports Land $10.4 Million in Federal Grants

The Leigh-Northampton Airport Authority Board of Governors accepted a series of grants worth $10.4 million from the FAA this week with most of the funding going toward runway improvements at Lehigh Valley International Airport.

More than $9.6 million will go toward improving the two runways at ABE. The airport is in the middle of a four-year project that will redirect water runoff, repave the runway and add improved lighting and markings. The funding will cover most of Phase III of the project, which has a total $9.7 million cost.

The airport shut down all flights for 52 hours last year to fix pavement at the intersection of the two runways. No additional closures of the runways are planned at this time.

Another $764,438 will go toward improvements at Queen City Airport in Allentown, including removing obstructions at the airport and hiring engineers to design rehabilitation work of the secondary runway.

“These are all critical safety and operational improvements to the runway infrastructure at both Lehigh Valley International Airport and Queen City Airport,” LNAA Executive Director Tom Stoudt said in a news release.

Most of the funding is coming from the CARES Act, which provides Coronavirus relief aid, according to Sen. Bob Casey’s office. LVIA was one of seven Pennsylvania airports to receive funding this month through the act.
