Syracuse Airport Lands $13 Million Federal Grant To Expand Deicing Facility
Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse Hancock International Airport has received a $13 million grant to expand its plane deicing facility.
U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the grant as part of $33.7 million in new federal funding to upgrade airport facilities and equipment at Upstate New York airports.
The money is coming from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.
The deicing facility is used to spray a solution on the wings and control surfaces of planes to remove snow, ice and frost before takeoff.
Federal grants for the Syracuse airport’s deicing pad expansion now amount to $37.7 million. Previously, the airport received $24.7 million in funding awards, including two $3 million grants and an $18.7 million grant from other federal programs.
The airport will cover the remaining $8.5 million of the $46.2 million project cost. Construction is scheduled to start by the end of the year.
