Rare, Vintage Aircraft to be Seen at Fly-In
Aviation enthusiasts are expected to either drive in or fly in to Greenville in droves to see some vintage and rare aircraft and visit with others in the flying community at a Fly-In at the Municipal Airport Saturday.
The Fly-In, which will feature historic planes like the A-26 Bomber, Lady Liberty, and a MIG-17F, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in conjunction with Saturday’s Veterans Day Parade, which will start at 10 a.m. in downtown Greenville.
The free family event will include additional activities like a train ride for kids in which the railroad cars are made from old bomb shells, musical entertainment courtesy of the Greenville Suzuki Strings program, and food trucks.
Throughout the event, several aviation enthusiasts are expected to fly in to the event in their private planes.
“We sent the message out to the flying community throughout the surrounding counties, so we expect to see a lot of them,” said Ty Helton, the manager of the Greenville Municipal Airport. “Overall, we counted over a 1,000 people at the event last year (both people who drove and flew), and we expect to see even more this year.”
The event will be manned by 50 to 100 volunteers who are passionate about aviation.
“We’ll have a lot of great, historic planes out there this year,” said Theo Hughes, who handled aircraft acquisition for the event. “We’ll even have one flown as a WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots) trainer that was used by those women during World War II.
“We’ll also have a few planes that people will be able to take rides in," Hughes added. “We just hope that lots of people come out and have a good time.”
Majors Airport is located at 101 Majors Road in Greenville.
