Though bad weather forced Redlands pilots to abandon their annual toy airlift in December, volunteers shipped the thousands of Toys for Tots donations by land instead.

On Dec. 7 volunteers packed a box truck that marines from Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms drove to the airport.

Cindy Gablin with the Redlands Airport Association said she estimates the group doubled the 5,000 toys collected the previous year.

“It gave us all much pleasure and comfort to make this larger toy contribution to such a great organization,” Gablin wrote in an email.

The local campaign helps children from Twentynine Palms to Riverside, including Redlands.
