About 3,000 Flights in U.S. Canceled on Monday; Logan, Bradley and T.F. Green Experience About 200 Cancellations Combined
Airports across the country saw about 3,000 flights canceled on Monday, however, the highest volume of issues occurred outside of New England.
While 2,957 flights were canceled in the U.S. as of Monday afternoon, according to Flight Aware, only about 100 flights were canceled at Logan International Airport in Boston, Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks and T.F. Green International Airport in Providence. About another 100 flights destined to the three airports were also canceled.
According to Flight Aware, 65 flights out of Logan were canceled on Monday, representing about 12% of the flights out of the airport. Another 63 were also delayed.
A total of 75 flights headed to Logan were also canceled at other airports around the country.
Fewer flights were affected in smaller airports like Bradley and T.F. Green, however, the issues affected a larger percentage of flights. At Bradley, Only 19 flights were canceled, but that accounted for 18% of the flights out of the airport.
At T.F. Green, 20 flights were canceled, which made up 23% of the flights from the airport.
Thirty-two flights — 16 at each airport — were canceled at other airports with destinations set for Bradley or T.F. Green.
Ronald Reagan International Airport in Arlington, Virginia saw 84% of its flights canceled today. Another 74% of the flights headed to the airport were also canceled.
More than 5,000 flights into or out of the United States were canceled over the holiday weekend due to COVID-19 and weather, according to Flight Aware.
Last week, JetBlue announced that it had canceled 1,200-plus flights through Jan. 13, including dozens at Logan as COVID-19 cases hit staff across the country, particularly in the Northeast.
A winter storm also hit the U.S. from the Rockies to the Midwest, sparking heavy cancellations in Chicago; more than 800 flights were canceled at O’Hare Airport and 250 at Midway Airport, The Associated Press reported on Saturday. High winds and bad weather forced Southwest Airlines to suspend operations at both Chicago airports, CNN Business reported.
Southwest accounted for the highest number of affected flights on Monday with 605 canceled and another 961 delayed as of Monday afternoon.
There are already more than 300 cancellations into or out of the United States on Wednesday.
