Spirit Airlines Adds Twice-Weekly Service Between Akron-Canton and Myrtle Beach
Feb. 10—GREEN, Ohio — Spirit Airlines is adding a twice weekly flight between the Akron-Canton Airport and Myrtle Beach, S.C., starting in mid-April.
The new route will be Spirit's fourth nonstop destination from Akron- Canton. The leisure-focused carrier also flies to Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers, Florida.
The announcement is a bright spot in an otherwise bleak winter of travel, as air carriers locally and worldwide continue to face a steep decline in demand due to the coronavirus pandemic. Air traffic at Akron- Canton was down 66.5% in 2020, and isn't expected to rebound for months.
Myrtle Beach, however, has remained a top destination for Northeast Ohio travelers, even during the pandemic, according to the airport.
"This route has been years in the making," said Ren Camacho, president and CEO at Akron- Canton. "From tracking local demand to monitoring the increase in leisure travel, we are confident this route matches the needs of our community."
Spirit also flies to Myrtle Beach from Cleveland Hopkins.
The new CAK service will run on Thursdays and Sundays, with the possibility of additional flights based on demand. Flights depart from Akron- Canton at 2:17 p.m., arriving in Myrtle Beach at 3:52 p.m. Return flights leave Myrtle Beach at 11:47 a.m., arriving at CAK at 1:27 p.m.
Tickets, starting at $43 one way, are on sale now.
