International Flights to Panama Resume After Covid Hiatus

Oct. 13, 2020

Mexico City (dpa) - International passenger flights in and out of Panama City's Tocumen Airport resumed on Monday after a break of about seven months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The first aircraft from Europe to land was a plane from Amsterdam with 158 passengers on board, airport operators said.

More than 16.5 million passengers used the airport last year. It is an important hub in the region.

Panama's President Laurentino Cortizo, who was on hand at the airport, tweeted that all necessary health measures were being taken.

With the resumption of air traffic in 20 countries, 85 per cent of the shops in the airport could reopen.

A negative coronavirus test is required upon arrival, which must be taken within 48 hours.

A quick test can be done at the airport for 50 dollars (around 42 euros).

Other sectors in Panama were also allowed to reopen from Monday, including hotels, cinemas and tourist attractions.

Panama, a country of just over 4 million inhabitants, has so far registered 120,802 cornavirus infections and 2,502 deaths in connection with the Covid-19 disease.
