Students planning careers in aviation or aerospace are invited to apply for competitive scholarships offered through the Flight Path Museum at Los Angeles International Airport. Applications will be accepted until May 25, 2019.
Five scholarships totaling $15,000 are offered, according to Agnes Huff, PhD, Flight Path president. These include the museum’s Pete Conrad Scholarship and the Clay Lacy, Morrey Plotkin, Howard Drollinger and Anton Acherman scholarships funded by generous Flight Path benefactors. “These annual scholarships have given a valuable boost to the education and careers of numerous students,” said Huff. “One of our recent winners is now a commercial airline pilot and others are well on their way to beginning exciting careers in aviation.”
Flight Path’s Pete Conrad Scholarship was named for the distinguished Apollo 12 and Gemini 11 astronaut, a man who walked on the moon and set a space endurance record. It is supported by proceeds from the museum’s annual Gala and other donations.
The Clay Lacy Scholarship was established by one of Southern California’s most notable commercial pilots and aviation entrepreneurs. Clay Lacy has generously funded this scholarship for many years. He has been actively involved with the museum’s scholarship committee in selecting awardees.
The Morrey Plotkin Scholarship perpetuates the legacy of Flight Path’s founding chairman. Morrey Plotkin was a successful business leader and a longtime benefactor of the museum as well as a number of other community organizations. The scholarship was established by the Plotkin family and is funded by them.
The Howard Drollinger Scholarship is the newest of Flight Path’s student assistance programs. Funded by the Drollinger family, it honors Howard Drollinger, a decorated World War II Army Air Corps navigator, and a leader and real estate developer in the Westchester and LAX area. Mr. Drollinger was the recipient of the first Honorary Service Award from the Flight Path Museum.
The Anton Acherman Scholarship was created in memory of the 52-year Westchester resident and retired mechanical engineer. Mr. Acherman led a fascinating career in aerospace including working on the Atlas-Centaur rocket; the water system for Skylab, America’s first space station; and test equipment for the Space Simulation Laboratory at Boeing Satellite Systems. The scholarship is funded by family, friends, neighbors and local businesses.
Flight Path Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., except major holidays, in the LAX Imperial Terminal, 6661 W. Imperial Hwy., Los Angeles. Admission and parking are free. The museum is operated by nonprofit Flight Path in cooperation with Los Angeles World Airports, the agency which operates LAX. Flight Path Museum’s mission includes the preservation of Southern California’s aviation heritage as well as encouragement and assistance to those pursuing education and careers in aviation and aerospace.
