A small plane crashed Thursday night while leaving Cape May Airport in Lower Township, an FAA spokesman told NJ Advance Media.

The single-engine Piper PA-28, which had three people aboard, crashed around 7:15 p.m., officials confirmed. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured.

The aircraft is registered to a Lower Township resident named John Smith, according to a FAA registration records.
