Take Flight in a WWII-Era Plane in Gwinnett County This March

On March 14, you could take part in a high-flying opportunity at the airport in Gwinnett County.

Guests are invited to take a once in a lifetime opportunity during Gwinnett County Airport Rides Day and fly in historical World War II airplanes.

“Experience the thrill of flying with one of the incredible flying experiences available. From a P-51 Mustang, to flying in the ‘Pilot Maker,’ the PT-19 Cornell. Whatever you fancy, you are sure to find a flying experience you’ll love. For a day you’ll never forget,” reads the event description.

The event is in high demand, so organizers encourage potential flyers to purchase their tickets in advance.

Tickets begin at $150 to fly in the PT-19 Cornell for 20 minutes and increase from there based on a combination of the type of plane flown and the duration of the flight. Available planes include the basic trainer/light attack aircraft T-34 Mentor and the P-51 Mustang, a single-seat, single-engine, fighter-bomber aircraft. Flights for the latter begin at $1,695 for 20 minutes. All planes allow guests to fly for up to an hour, if they choose to do so.

After purchasing their ride, guests should contact coordinator Rodney Higginbotham at 1-833-FLYWARBIRD or [email protected] to schedule their flight.

The event is hosted by the Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing and Fly Gwinnett Aero. The former is a nonprofit with the mission to “to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircrafts which were flown by all military services of the United States, and selected aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans.” Dixie Wing is CAF’s Georgia chapter.

Fly Gwinnett Aero is an airport hanger in Lawrenceville designed for and by pilots.
