Sep. 2--A small plane crashed into a Brighton field Wednesday afternoon shortly after taking off, killing the pilot, Adams County officials said. 

Around 12:15 p.m., witnesses heard the two-seater plane's engine appear to stall a few minutes after taking off from the Van Aire Airport. The plane then spiraled into a field near 160th Street and Gun Club Road, said Sgt. Adam Sherman, spokesman for the Adams County Sheriff's Office.

Preliminary reports indicate the pilot to be the sole fatality, Sherman said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will head the investigation.

Van Aire bills itself as a "flying community," where residents have access to a small runway next to their homes.
