Higher Aspirations: Celebrating 90 Years of Flight in San Diego

Aug. 17, 2018

San Diego has always looked out over an endless expanse of blue. The ocean, of course, but also the sky. Because this is a place of higher aspirations and home to one of the world’s great airports. From John Joseph Montgomery’s heavier-than-air flight in the U.S. in his “aero-plane” in 1883, and Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight in the San Diego-built “Spirit of St. Louis” to the design of the world’s first LEED Platinum certified commercial airport terminal and its new Customs facility with facial scan technology at entry, San Diego International Airport has been at the heart of civic change and aviation firsts for nearly a century. But we have miles ahead of us and so many places to see.
