Minnesota-based materials handling supplier Skarnes Inc recently completed an installation at the 148th Fighter Wing, a unit of the Minnesota International Guard based in Duluth.

The 148th needed a means of loading and unloading jet engines, in addition to working on small components in an area with limited headroom.

To accomplish the unit’s needs, Skarnes installed two top-running double-girder cranes featuring two hoists. Overall, the setup features a 3-ton that allows the crew to move the entire engine assembly, in addition to a 1-ton that allows for the transportation of smaller parts.

The design is intended to provide maximum efficiency, with the double crane allowing crews to work simultaneously via multiple stations. Also featured are radio controls, removing issues of having to work around pendant cables. Meanwhile, they also provide the ability to place parts more precisely.
