Next-Generation Power Distribution Unit Showcases Eaton's Capabilities as Major Electrical Sub-System Supplier for Aerospace Industry
IRVINE, Calif. …Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation has responded to the aerospace industry’s demand for greater efficiency in power generation and distribution by expanding its electrical component and sub-system portfolio. The aircraft power distribution unit (PDU) is a prime example of Eaton’s proven component expertise and packaging capabilities as an electrical sub-system supplier. Eaton will feature the PDU as part of its product and technology demonstrations during the National Business Aviation Association’s 64th Annual Meeting and Convention on Oct. 10-12 in Las Vegas.
Eaton’s ability to leverage experience from its extensive electrical distribution and control portfolio has helped accelerate advancements in aerospace products. Eaton is expanding its presence in the aerospace electrical market by offering fully integrated systems and sub-systems to increase capability while reducing size and weight.
“A major advantage for customers is our ability to engineer and manufacture to their specifications while ensuring consistency of quality operation in both components and sub-systems,” said Einar Johnson, vice president of customer solutions and services for Eaton’s Aerospace Group. “We’re excited about introducing new products and technologies that support the next generation of more electrical and more efficient aircraft.”
The unique design of the PDU is a result of value-added engineering. Eaton has packaged proven relay, contactor and circuit breaker products into a single-line replaceable assembly that offers the user a customized power module. Innovative packaging significantly reduces overall system weight while improving system-level reliability and maintainability.
Additional advantages include ease of installation and accessibility, lower on-aircraft test time, and reduced overall aircraft build time since PDUs support both current and evolving higher power architectures.
Eaton’s commercial relay portfolio includes more than 1,000 different relays and contactors with complementary hardware and accessories. These devices have a broad range of applications for commercial and military aircraft markets.
Eaton is pursuing new product developments in the emerging fields of high-voltage DC contactors, “smart” contactors with integrated features such as current sensing or arc fault detection, lightweight generator contactors and custom power distribution units.
In the aerospace industry, Eaton is a leading supplier of hydraulic, electro-hydraulic pump and generator products and integrated systems; engine and airframe fuel pumps; electric motors; aircraft door actuation, flight and flow controls; fluid, fuel and air delivery products and systems; nose wheel steering systems; integrated control systems; cockpit controls and displays; power and load management systems; pressure sensors, seals, and fluid health monitoring products and systems.
