MACON, GA -- Atlantic Southeast Airlines plans to transfer about 60 administrative jobs from its Macon operation to the company's Atlanta headquarters.

The move will take place next spring when ASA moves into a 200,000-square-foot facility that includes a hangar it leased recently at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, says Kate Modolo, ASA spokeswoman.

ASA employs about 400 people at its facility at Middle Georgia Regional Airport, where it performs heavy aircraft maintenance. Line maintenance, such as overnight checks, is performed in Atlanta.

The positions to be transferred "are support functions, not mechanics per se," Modolo says. "They support our maintenance operations, such as record keepers and other administrative support."

The workers will join about 3,200 ASA employees in Atlanta, she says.

The move is no refection on the work done in Macon, Modolo adds.

"Our Macon maintenance team continues to be an absolutely integral part of ASA's operation and success and will continue as such," she says. "That maintenance facility continues to be a vital part of our heavy maintenance operation. That team does a great job for us day in and day out of getting our aircraft ready for us. There are no plans for any of that to leave."

Mike Anthony, the city interim aviation director and chief administration officer, said Tuesday he was not aware of the ASA job transfers and wasn't sure how it would affect ASA's operation here.

"But obviously, here in Macon, we don't want to lose any jobs," he says.

ASA currently operates the only commercial flights out of the Middle Georgia Regional Airport, and this operation is "mutually exclusive" of the decision to move maintenance jobs to Atlanta, Modolo says.
