Thousands of Aircraft Mechanics Improperly Licensed

FAA admits as many as 1,300 repair certificates may have been issued by a questionable licensing operation.

A News 8 investigation has found that thousands of FAA-certified aircraft mechanics nationwide, including hundreds in Texas, have been improperly licensed since 1993.

The mechanics include those who work in the airline industry for aircraft manufacturers and for privately-owned aircraft maintenance facilities known as "repair stations." Many of them fix planes Texans fly on.

"Every time a problem comes to light it seems to be cyclical," said Gabe Bruno, a former FAA manager.
