Vintage Aircraft Competition Heats Up as Heavy Iron Lands all New Award Category

The large vintage aircraft category award joins the existing categories.

The National Aviation Heritage Invitational, the country’s premier travelling aviation museum, today announced a new category award for large vintage aircraft to compete for the Rolls-Royce Aviation Heritage Trophy.

The new category, sponsored by Air Transport World, applies to aircraft such as: the Douglas DC-3; Grumman Albatross; B-25 Mitchell; Lockheed Harpoon; Douglas Invader A-26; Grumman Avenger TBF; Grumman TigerCat F7F; and the Douglas Skyraider.

Bill Freeman, Publisher of Air Transport World said: “ATW is proud to be the sponsor of this new very important category and first time award. This category will add another dimension to the Invitational.”

The large vintage aircraft category award joins the Antique, Classic and Warbird categories and will be in competition for the overall winning trophy - The Rolls-Royce Aviation Heritage Trophy. In addition, the People’s Choice award, sponsored by the National Aviation Hall of Fame, goes to the owner of the aircraft receiving the largest number of votes cast by the event attendees.

Prospective entries for this new large aircraft category must act quickly as space is limited to seven aircraft in static display. Applications must be submitted online at: www.heritagetrophy.org. no later than August 20, 2010.

The National Aviation Heritage Invitational takes place annually and is held each year at the Reno Air Races and Air Show, Stead Airport, Reno Nevada. Rolls-Royce, the National Aviation Hall of Fame, the Reno Air Racing Foundation sponsor the Invitational, with support from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum, the General Aviation Manufacturer’s Association (GAMA), Air Transport World, Air and Space Smithsonian magazine, Airmail Greetings, Super98, Perform Air, the Perich Group and LiveAirShowTV.
