CHICAGO --

United Airlines says it reached a tentative agreement with the union for its 5,500 airplane mechanics.

United and Continental airlines are both run by United Continental Holdings Inc., which is combining them into a single airline.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents mechanics at both airlines. Continental mechanics ratified a new contract in November. The next step is for the company to reach a single contract covering mechanics at the combined airline.

Pilots are also negotiating a joint contract. For flight attendants, an election will be held to choose between two unions before negotiations for a joint contract begin.
