airberlin Joins oneworld Alliance; American Airlines Offers Double Miles Program
In acknowledgment of airberlin's inauguration into the oneworld alliance, members of the American Airlines AAdvantage program can earn double miles every time they fly an eligible fare on airberlin, between March 20 and May 15.
According to a release, AAdvantage members were already eligible to earn and redeem AAdvantage miles for travel on airberlin, but with it joining the oneworld alliance, travel on airberlin will now count toward qualification for AAdvantage elite status.
Officials noted that the alliance with airberlin, combined with airberlin's affiliate Niki, will expand oneworld's network to more than 800 destinations in more than 150 countries, served by nearly 9,000 daily departures, adding a network in Central and South Europe to the alliance's offerings. airberlin, an airline in Germany, serves 163 destinations in 39 countries. It serves several of American's cornerstone markets, including Los Angeles, Miami and New York.
American and airberlin began codesharing in November 2010 on several trans-Atlantic routes, as well as on U.S. domestic and intra-European flights. Most recently, American and airberlin extended their codeshare relationship to include airberlin's service between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Berlin Tegel Airport.
American Airlines, American Eagle and the AmericanConnection carrier serve 260 airports in more than 50 countries and territories with approximately 3,300 daily flights.
