Feb. 2, 2012

The government of Abu Dhabi approved the construction of the new Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) worth AED 11.7bn (USD 3.2bn), Gulf News reported. The terminal is part of the USD 6.8bn redevelopment of the Abu Dhabi International Airport. Located between the airport's two runways, the MTC is to become operational in 2017. The MTC building is to be between 630,000 and 702,369 square meters in size, including 20,000 square meters of retail and food and beverage outlets to be set around an 8,400 square meters indoor park hosting Mediterranean plants and features at its centre, and desert landscapes at its edge. Abu Dhabi International Airport continues to be one of the fastest growing airports in the world, recording a 19.7% growth over the last five years and handling 12mn passengers per year. The MTC building is to initially handle 30mn passengers per year. Tenders for the construction of the terminal were received from six international consortia in November 2011 and the construction of the MTC building is planned to start in the second quarter of 2012.
