Pee Dee Air show returning to mid-May roots

Jan. 30--FLORENCE, S.C. -- The eighth annual Pee Dee Air Show and Festival returns to its roots this year with the event moving back to its original dates, May 19-20.

It will feature a few new acts, too, including six-member Black Diamond squadron, which brings five Aero Vodcchovy L-39s Albatros, a 1960s Soviet combat training jet, and one MiG-17, a Soviet high-subsonic aircraft from the 1950s. The team will perform a variety of stunts at speeds up to 400 mph.

The team includes civilians involved in the aviation industry and former Air Force and Navy pilots, including two former Thunderbirds team pilots.

Other acts are the Tombstone Wing Walker, Motorcycle Insanity and the F-18 Hornet jet demo team. Rounding out the two-day extravaganza are an antique tractor and classic car show.

New this year is a bi plane that seats four adults in the front cockpit. All are invited to come out for a ride.

The much anticipated biannual show based at the Florence Airport is a huge family festival that includes a food court, a Kidzone with a variety of rides, and a wide assortment of vendors.

The Black Diamond Jet team will be showcased in the air and a jet powered Humvee will make the ground shake.
