Noxious odor overcomes TSA workers at Kauai Airport

Nov. 4, 2011

Nov. 04--Authorities were investigating the cause of a noxious odor that affected several people Thursday night at Kauai Airport.

Details were still sketchy Thursday night, but preliminary reports said the odor overcame about 10 Transportation Security Administration workers at the central security checkpoint just before 7 p.m., said state Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Meisenzahl.

Airport firefighters and a Kauai County hazardous materials crew were sent to investigate. The roads going into the airport and the security checkpoint were closed for about 40 minutes while officials investigated.

No flights were cancelled or delayed as two other checkpoints were opened.

Meisenzahl said firefighters were investigating the source of the odor. It wasn't immediately clear of the workers had to be hospitalized.
