ARE PLANS TO TACKLE HEATHROW NOISE AND AIR POLLUTION ENOUGH?
LONDON, Oct. 19 -- London Assembly issued the following press release:
What is being done to reduce aircraft noise and improve air quality around Heathrow airport?
Building on its previous work, the London Assembly Environment Committee will tomorrow hold a meeting to discuss environmental issues at London Heathrow Airport, which handles around 66 million passengers and 449,000 flights each year.
The Committee is particularly interested in asking about plans for dealing with the main air pollutants - nitrogen (NO2) and particles (PM10 and PM2.5). GLA modelling shows areas around Heathrow will continue to exceed limits for nitrogen oxides, despite measures included in the Mayor's Air Quality Strategy.
Members will also ask about noise caused by aircraft, including night flights, which can affect the daily lives and sleep of residents - not only in the areas directly bordering the airport, but as far as Clapham, Camberwell and Blackheath.
The following guests will attend:
* Matt Gorman - Corporate Responsibility Director, BAA
* Rick Norman - Head of Noise and Air Quality, BAA
* John Stewart - Chair, HACAN
* Prof. Duncan Laxen - Director, Air Quality Consultants
* Rob Gibson - Head of Environmental Strategy, LB Hounslow
* Cllr Corinna Smart - Lead Member for Environment, LB Hounslow
* Lucinda Turner - Head of Sub-Regional Strategy and Policy, Transport for London
The Environment Committee meeting will take place on Thursday 20 October from 10am in Committee Room 5 at City Hall (The Queen's Walk, London SE1). Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast (http://www.london.gov.uk/who-runs-london/the-london-assembly/webcasts) For any query with respect to this article or any other content requirement, please contact Editor at [email protected]
